Rhinoplasty (“nose job”)
This is a cosmetic operation to alter the shape of the nose.
Many people are self conscious about the shape of their nose, particularly if the nose is twisted or if the profile is too prominent. There are also other aspects relating to the size or shape of the tip of the nose: every individual has their own unique perspective of how they would like their nose to look.
The Surgeon’s role is to assess not only the nose but how the balance of the face would be altered by a rhinoplasty. A realistic assessment of the outcome of surgery would be made and explained by the Doctor during a consultation. Facial photographs would be taken and, in some cases, a guide as to the likely outcome of surgery can be shown by manipulating the photographs with the help of computer imaging.
The surgery itself is carried out under a general anaesthetic. The operation is performed from within the nose with no external cuts. In specific cases a cut may be necessary to gain better access but this would be discussed with the patient prior to the operation.
The Hospital stay is usually for one night only. A plaster cast will be applied for the protection of the nose; this is removed after one week. Swelling of the nose and black eyes are inevitable although this aspect of surgery settles a week or so post operatively. Surprisingly, pain is not a problem following this procedure. If the nose is blocked, additional surgery can be carried out at the same time to improve the function of the nose.
Generally two weeks will be required before you are able to return to work. The appearance of your nose should now be quite acceptable.
COSTS
Most private insurance companies exclude cosmetic surgery. There are exceptions and it is always worthwhile enquiring, particularly if the problem is related to trauma. The details of the costs involved can be obtained by contacting us on: 020 8852 8938.
